Washed fibre analysis

€12.00
Tax included

Full analysis on washed fibre: each sample is washed individually before measurement, with no correction factor, and every fibre is counted (Trim High OFF). Full-staple measurement: 21 indicators, including mean micron, SD, CV, CEM, comfort factor, curvature, length and number of fibres, with the histogram and the along-staple micron profile (SD Along, SD Across). PDF report per animal with species-specific advice, herd summary, fineness class and detailed results on Fibre Herd. The most accurate and complete measurement for each animal.

New at Fibre Lab & Co: description and advice included

Your report includes a plain-language description for each animal and for the whole herd, with advice on next steps. At no extra cost: the “Include the description and advice” box is ticked by default; you can untick it before adding to your cart.

What you get

  • For each animal, 21 indicators: identification (animal, date of birth, sex, colour), mean diameter, standard deviation (SDD), coefficient of variation (CVD), coarse edge (CEM), comfort factor (CF, % of fibres ≤ 30 µm), share of fibres under 15 µm, spinning fineness, along-staple profile (Fine From Tip, MaxD, MinD, BaseD), variation along the staple (SD Along) and between fibres (SD Across), curvature and its standard deviation (SDC), staple length and number of fibres measured.
  • The diameter histogram and the micron profile along the staple, from tip to skin, showing how nutrition, illness or pregnancy affected the growth year.
  • The fineness class for the species (alpaca, llama, mohair, cashmere, sheep).
  • One PDF report per animal with species-specific comments and advice, and a herd summary with comparisons and selection priorities, downloadable from your account. If you use Fibre Herd, results land on the animal's record, matched by its FLID (Fibre Herd Livestock ID, the animal's unique and permanent identifier on Fibre Herd, linking its samples and results to its record).

Our method

  • Measured on OFDA 2000 in staple mode, in-house method derived from IWTO-47.
  • Individual washing: each sample is washed separately before measurement. Diameter is measured directly on clean fibre, with no correction factor: the most accurate measurement for each animal.
  • Trim High OFF: every measured fibre is counted, including the coarsest (guard hair above 80 µm). Washed and measured clean, the fibre gives an exact measurement of each of them, for a complete picture of the fleece.
  • Daily instrument self-test and a reference staple with every batch. See our quality charter.

Reading your results

Look at SD before CV: the lower it is, the more uniform, soft and even the fleece. Compare animals year on year by always sampling the same spot. SD Across measures the variation between fibres, without the effect of season or feed along the staple (SD Along).

Taking the sample

Diagram - mid-side sampling

  • Mid-side: halfway between shoulder and hip, halfway down the body. Always the same side and spot.
  • A small handful about two fingers wide, i.e. about 5 cm, cut close to the skin to capture the whole growth.
  • Send the fibre as it is, unwashed: washing is done in the lab, sample by sample.
  • In a paper envelope or bag (no sealed plastic), labelled with the animal's name and number.
  • Fill in the information sheet (PDF) and send it with the samples.

Turnaround: 1 to 2 weeks after receipt, up to 1 month during shearing season.

Sample return: if you would like your samples back after analysis, tick "Return my samples after analysis (+€12 per order)" just before the Add to cart button. Only one return is charged per order, whatever the number of animals or analyses.

OFDA 2000 fibre test - Fibre Lab metrological control programme (charter v3.0)

Measurement on the OFDA 2000 in staple mode, using an in-house method derived from IWTO-47. Documented internal checks every test day and for every batch. Internal metrology control programme - in-house method derived from IWTO-47. Rigor rests on the procedure below.

How we stand behind the result

  • Daily OFDA 2000 autotest on internal calibration fibres (10-100 µm). Outside manufacturer tolerance = no client testing.
  • One batch reference staple (max deviation 0.3 µm on mean diameter).
  • Weekly inter-series check on archive samples (same 0.3 µm threshold).
  • Options always shown on the report: washing, correction factor, Trim High.
  • If a check falls outside limits: testing stops until control is restored.

A result is only meaningful if the process is the same from one batch to the next. Our charter describes that process.
